What's Transmeta?
Where's Linus Torvalds?
A computer chip named Crusoe?
A notebook that has a real battery life of 10 hours?
Intel's X86 chip architecture is 25 years old. If computer age is measured like a dog's age, then it's 175 years old.
So sly old Linus and a company called Transmeta have now revolutionized the PC chip! It's a hybrid that runs x86 code like a RISC processor, but instead of burning the code into the chip, it's handled by software. Less transistors means using a fraction of the normal battery used by an Intel/AMD chip. Currently available in two speeds, a 700 Mhz for light weight notebooks and a 400 Mhz for PDA's and other wireless products. A new Mobile Linux is shipping with the 400 Mhz, optimizes power usage and is small enough to fit in ROM. It supports a range of applications for handheld devices, including Web browsing programs and personal productivity software.
Look for a crusoe chip powered line of notebooks from just about every manufacturer, many in time for Christmas. New PDA's as well. Looks like a Linux based hand held phone/palmpilot/computer with decent battery life may be coming to a venue near you, real soon. ( more )

Seems that Sun Microsystem's Scott McNealy is at it again and just can't pass up a chance to get a dig in against our old friend Bill. Seems ole' Bill has a lock on office related programs, so what does Scott do? Sun is releasing the code for Star Office, the already free alternative to Microsoft Office. Not only does Star Office do all the things MS Office does, including complete compatibility with MS files - it now will be an open source. Scott's hoping for a repeat of the Linux open source success. Makes you wonder just how long ole' Bill can hang on before the world wakes up and asks: "Why the heck an I paying for this stuff?" Release is due on October 13 and can be accessed at http://www.openoffice.org .

Just as Ole Bill announced the release of last and final version of Winbloze (there is a God!), Linux is just now really taking off. Did you pay for a Microsoft O/S license when you bought that computer or note book? The answer is probably "yes". Sure made Corel's stock jump.

Seems that Sun Microsystem's Scott McNealy just couldn't pass up a chance to get a dig in against our old friend Bill. How would you like to have a complete office suite of programs that Byte magazine says is better than the $689.95 Office 2000 from Microsoft? It even handles MS files!
Of course, there's a Linux ported version, and
a Winbloze version among others!
The best part, it's FREE!
Downloading StarOffice is a honker, over 70 Mb so you probably are better off to spend the US$39.95 + $7 S&H and get the manual and the CD (which has all ported releases on it).
