What's Transmeta?
Where's Linus Torvalds?
A computer chip named Crusoe?
A notebook that has a real battery life of 10 hours?
Intel's X86 chip architecture is 25 years old. If computer age is measured like
a dog's age, then it's 175 years old.
So sly old Linus and a company called Transmeta have now revolutionized the PC
chip! It's a hybrid that runs x86 code like a RISC processor, but instead of
burning the code into the chip, it's handled by software. Less
transistors means
using a fraction
of the normal battery used by an Intel/AMD chip. Currently available in two
speeds, a 700 Mhz for light weight notebooks and a 400 Mhz for PDA's and other
wireless products. A new Mobile Linux is shipping with the 400 Mhz, optimizes
power usage and is small enough to fit in ROM. It supports a range of
applications for handheld devices, including Web browsing programs and personal
productivity software.
Look for a crusoe chip powered line of notebooks from just about every
manufacturer, many in time for Christmas. New PDA's as well. Looks like a Linux
based hand held phone/palmpilot/computer with decent battery life may be coming
to a venue near you, real soon. (

A resource that probably needs to be mentioned once more is the
Linux Software Encyclopedia
which is maintained by Steven K. Baum. It has over 5500 listings and has been
continuously updated since 1995. The downloaded PostScript version is over 1000
pages. Just one more example of just how great Linux and its resources are!
ZDTV the television arm of Ziff-Davis, computer related magazines, has changed
its name to TechTV and has fully embraced the Linux O/S. They have even
purchased the
Linux Hardware Database
to add to their online support. They feature 24/7 computer related programming
and plenty of support for Windows, lord knows Windows user need it! Currently
available to satellite TV users and some cable providers.
Looking for a simple, easy to use programming language? You may wish to check

Claims its much simpler to use than Basic, yet more powerful than C++ and it's
available in a Linux version. Let me know what you think.
Linux password expired? Linuxconf allows passwords to expire over an extended
time period, so how do you work around this?

Seems that Sun Microsystem's Scott McNealy is at it again and just can't pass
up a chance to get a dig in against our old friend Bill. Seems ole' Bill has a
lock on office related programs, so what does Scott do? Sun is releasing the
code for Star Office, the already free alternative to Microsoft Office. Not
only does Star Office do all the things MS Office does, including complete
compatibility with MS files - it now will be an open source. Scott's hoping for
a repeat of the Linux open source success. Makes you wonder just how long ole'
Bill can hang on before the world wakes up and asks: "Why the heck an I paying
for this stuff?" Release is due on October 13 and can be accessed at
http://www.openoffice.org
.
Just as Ole Bill announced the release of last and final version of Winbloze
(there is a God!), Linux is just now really taking off. The Japaness big boys,
22 of them including SONY, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Hitachi, and a host of
other heavy hitters, have announced a consortium with TurboLinux Japan to
develop and promote a defacto standard of the Linux O/S for use in the next
generation of hardware applications like PC's in your TV, wireless phones and
car navigation.

In the past, there have been some concerns regarding security with Linux boxes
on the net, example Chase-Manhatten Bank does not allow Linux on any of their
servers, well as usual, Linux has met the challenge, read more about
here.

Got a need for speed? Especially important for gamers,
Stampede Linux

operating system that the average user can install
and operate easily.
Red Hat and Dell Computers have teamed up to provide the Linux O/S on out of
the box Dell Computers, a
one source
resource. That's a combination that's hard to beat.

Easy to install, easy to use Xwindows GUI, Helix Gnome 1.2 is getting some good
press, check out his review from

Using a DSL or cable modem connection, do you access your system remotely from
your laptop?
It maybe time to look at whether you're "hacker bait"!

TurboLinux®
releases Operating System in Six New Languages. Here's what the press release
says:
"TurboLinux is now shipping its Workstation and Server products in French,
German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, U.K.
English language versions. These new products add to TurboLinux's award-winning
offerings in Chinese (Simplified
and Traditional), English, Korean and Japanese.
The new language offerings from TurboLinux include localized language versions
of the office productivity suite
StarOffice from Sun Microsystems as well as a localized version of the
TurboLinux installer, disk partitioning utility and
configuration utilities, among others.
Note: Star Office is currently available in Danish, Dutch, English, French,
German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. You may find
the link farther down on this page.
Did you pay for a Microsoft O/S license when you bought that computer or note
book? The answer is probably "yes". The courts have recently decided against
Ol' Bill forcing manufacturers to buy licenses for all their product lines
regardless of what the end user intends to use the computer for. Guess what,
you may be able to get a refund -- check out this article on
"Getting a refund".
You got ta' love Linux -- The winmodem blues just maybe a thing of the past.
Check out our links page for more info. Seems that if you stop thinking of the
thing as a modem and start looking at it as a phone dialer.. well , just check
it out!
Check out
TuxTops,
a great site dedicated to Linux and notebook computers.
Interested in experiencing Linux yourself.
ZDNET
has a great quick start page with plenty of how-to's and some great downloads.
What are you waiting for? LINUX is now!
So the debate rages, and now there just might be the final answer, which is
better WindowsNT (gag) or Linux?
A report about a study in which Linux and NT
were put head to head during one year has been published at
GNet
GNet now features a 1-on-1 exclusive interview with Linus Torvalds, just
minutes after Transmeta launched its Crusoe CPU, discussing Linux and
Transmeta, java, etc.
It's available at
http://gnet.dhs.org/linus/
Linux-Mandrake 7.1 (Helium), new and improved with plenty of video driver
support especially for matrox, and other bleeding edge AGP cards
Linux-Mandrake
is now avilable as a free download or available from resellers as a package
with over 2000 programs
and plenty of support. Last version sold for $55.
Hey, how about that guy Michael Chaney? Needed to get his email from Bill's
Hotmail on Xmas eve. But NO-O-O!, Hotmail was down because Bill forgot to pay
for
his domain name. So being the clever guy, Michael Chaney forked over the $35
registration fee to Network Solutions, and got Hotmail turned back on. Oops!
Read about it here.
Jbuilder is now new and improved, available from
Insprise/Borland
, "for rapidly delivering 100% Pure Java2 applications. It is a free download.
Due to popular request, here's the link for the freely downloadable
WordPerfect v8.
It's good for 90 days and then you must register (without cost). I had resisted
placing this here because of what seemed like a direct attack on the open
source license by Corel. They have since "clarified" their stance and you can
read about it on their website as well as finding the download:
linux.corel.com
Check out the new Corel Linux that critics claim is the easiest of all to
install. Sure made Corel's stock jump.
Seems that Sun Microsystem's Scott McNealy just couldn't pass up a chance to get
a dig in against our old friend Bill. How would you like to have a complete
office suite of programs that Byte magazine says is better than the $689.95
Office 2000 from Microsoft? It even handles MS files!
Of course, there's a Linux ported version, and
a Winbloze version among others!
The best part, it's FREE!
Downloading
StarOffice
is a honker, over 70 Mb so you probably are better off to spend
the US$39.95 + $7 S&H and get the manual and the CD (which has all ported
releases on it). Just one more great reason why Linux is the OS of the next
millenium. Poor Ole Bill, just when he thinks he's finally got something
right...
There is a website which attempts to test different Linux releases on
name brand computers. Check out
KeyLabs.
Hey, gamers...
Myth II
is out, just put the CD in the drive, mount it and run
the install program... real GUI without the hassles.
Cable modem, DSL, ISDN -
So you've got a cable modem. Want to know how to set it up and even share it
across the a network. Did you know Linux can use DSL? ISDN?
Go to our "Links" page for the whole scoop.
Enlightenment 0.16.4
works very nicely!
